The concept of using natural systems to clean the water for swimming is quite recent, dating back to the mid 70's in Austria where the green shoots of the environmental movement wanted a better swimming experience. Since then, many swimming ponds have been built on the continent, not only for private use but large public ponds as well. They say the water is good enough to drink once it is returned to the pond. In the UK the history is much shorter. How does it work?

The concept is relatively simple; the idea is to create a swimming zone within the excavated area of the pond. This zone will be deep and large enough for the client's swimming needs. Around the swimming zone is a planted regeneration zone. A retaining wall between these two areas keeps them apart. The retaining wall tends to finish about 300mm below the water surface so that water can flow freely from the swimming zone to the regeneration zone. From a visual perspective, this allows the swimming zone to merge into the overall feel of the pond.

The pond is lined and the regeneration zone outside the swimming area filled with suitable aggregate which allows bacteria plenty of surface area to cling too. These bacteria perform the task of cleaning the water. A variety of bacteria decompose any organic matter, releasing nitrates and phosphates. Above the aggregates, plants not only feed on these nitrates and phosphates, but also transform the pool in to a natural pond nestling in its environment. Plants range from those that prefer deeper water such as lilies to those living in the margins and bog areas. Perforated pipes beneath the regeneration zone allow cleaned water to be drawn by a pump and returned to the swimming zone. Other components in the plumbing system includes skimmers for removing leaves and large debris, filters for finer particles and UV filters for added security.

The bacteria that do the work in the regeneration zone are aerobic so need oxygen. The plants help channel oxygen via their root systems but additional aeration is always a plus and can be built into a feature such as a waterfall or fountain. As a rule of thumb, the filter area should be as large as the swimming zone, in other words, 50% of the total area. Filter efficiency will vary depending on the aggregate used for the medium. The aggregate must not increase the pH above 7.5 so any limestone materials are out of the question. Gravels can be used but materials such as expanded clay and pumice offer much greater surface area for bacteria to live and multiply with the added benefit of being pH neutral. Where space is critical, or the design does not allow for a regeneration zone of the required proportions then biofilters are available. These are boxes filled with a high surface area material into which you introduce the bacteria. The water then passes though the filter and is cleaned. Don't forget though, if you want the look of a natural pond, then you need plenty of space devoted to the regeneration zone to achieve the desired effect.

6 Step to Winterize a Hot Tub

To many hot tub users, using their tub in the middle of the frigid winter season is exciting and soothing. It totally gives a different kind of spa experience. (Your sense of taste isn't working either -- smell and taste are closely related and affect each other!)

So, to correctly analyze your problem, you need to become a detective. The best time to locate the smell is after you have been away from home for a few hours -- this allows your nose to become sensitive to "that smell" again. With your 'sensitized' nose, go to an outside spigot -- one that the raw, untreated water flows from. Turn it on, let it run a few minutes, then smell it. If it smells -- we found it. If not, we must look further. (Many, many smells are not in the raw water at all, they are introduced into the water inside the house.) Go to a cold, treated water spigot inside the house, turn it on and let it run a minute; then smell. If this water smells, and the outside, untreated water didn't -- you must have a device (cartridge filter, water softener, etc.) in the water line that needs to be cleaned and sanitized.

If it is a cartridge, or 'string' filter, replace the element and sanitize the housing. If you have a water conditioner call the Company where you bought the unit for advise on how to sanitize the unit. If you rent the unit, just call! You can sanitize the unit by pouring Hydrogen Peroxide or Chlorine Bleach in the brine well of the salt tank, and placing the unit into regeneration. Check with the seller, or, if they are no longer in business, any Professional Water Conditioning Dealer for how much to put in your particular unit.

If the cold, treated water inside didn't smell, turn on the hot water and let it run a few minutes -- does it smell? If it does, chances are you have a sacrificial anode inside your hot water heater that is "coming apart at the seams" and throwing off a "rotten egg" odor. This obnoxious smell will drive you right out of your shower! The only solution is to remove the anode from the heater, voiding your warranty, or replace it with a new one made with aluminum alloy. This anode is placed in a (glass lined) hot water heater to seal up any cracks in the glass lining and prevent corrosion of the heater tank. You will find the anode on the top of the heater; remove the tin cover and insulation -- look for what looks like a pipe plug -- about 3/4 inch in size with a 1 1/16"fitting. Turn off the heat source and the water; have someone hold the tank to prevent it from turning, and unscrew the "plug". You will find that the 'plug' has a 30 - 40 " long pipe (or what's left of one) attached to it. Hopefully, most of the rod is still attached -- just corroded. If so, replace the plug with a real pipe plug and throw the anode away. If part of the rod has corroded off, and fallen into the heater, you may have to try to fish it out. Either way, before you plug the hole, pour about 2 pints of chlorine bleach into the heater first. This will kill the smell left in the heater. If, after a week or so, the smell returns, you must fish out the rod that is in the bottom of the tank. Good Luck!

8.A power safety cover that meets the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) may add to the protection of your children but should not be used in place of the fence between your house and the pool. Even fencing around your pool and using a power safety cover will not prevent all drownings.

I'm a pool owner, have been for 8 years now. It was in my third year of ownership that I purchased an (expensive) above ground pool winter cover. Guess what I use it for?

I cover my pool each and every night in the summer.

That's right. When I'm done swimming for the day, I pull over the above ground pool winter cover and let that heat stay right where I want it.

Not sure where you live, I'm in Southern British Columbia, Canada. Nice place, we hit 70-90 degrees on occasion. Thing is, come evening, most nights you throw on a sweatshirt to keep warm. Temperatures do drop a bit come sunset. This is when I put the cover on my above ground swimming pool. I like to trap in the heat that my solar panels, attached to the south facing roof, have provided all day long.

In the morning, if I want an early swim, I can roll back the cover and jump right in. I know that pool is the 85+ degrees I left it at the night before. Now I have a backup heater system as well. It is a 25,000 BTU gas heater. When it comes on, I can actually see the gauge inside my gas meter at the side of my house moving.

Before I covered my pool, that good old gas heater would fire up around 3-4 am each morning to keep the pool to temperature. Did not think much of it until I received a couple of gas bills. Did not help that the gas company bills me every two months.

After a summer of $400 plus gas bills, I finally decided the investment into a good, quality, above ground pool cover was in order. My cover has a blue vinyl surface with a black plastic / vinyl underside. It is about 1/8th think with a heat resistant material in the middle.

It does not work like a solar cover, it will reflect light and heat when it is on. What is does do is keep the heat inside the pool. As a side bonus, it prevents water evaporation, which has proved to be less chemicals needed as well. Yes, I paid $1000 for the cover, once I had it custom made for my lazy L shaped pool. First year I believe I have saved that money in gas bills alone as my heater never runs.

I also get to open my pool almost a month ahead of my neighbours each spring. I put on my above ground pool cover and fire up the heater. This is my start up expense and I budget for it. My pool is hot within 48 hours and I take the cover off and on as I use the pool.

My neighbours are still waiting for a bit of sunshine to warm their above ground pool solar covers and unfortunately loose most their heat every day in the beginning. They loose their heat the same way it comes in, through their solar blankets.

My above ground pool winter cover is the only cover I have.

Come winter, we get cold but rarely freeze, so I keep the cover off my pool as I have no heat to protect and we like the pleasant look of an open pool versus a pool all bundled with leaves rainwater and debris all on top.

Sure I need to clean it on occasion, but we all need a few extra chores now don't we?

Welcome to the safety archive! Using common sense, caution and standard practices can keep chemical applicators and pool users safe from harm. Safety around a swimming pool is an issue addressed by pool & spa professionals, their trade associations, and your local government in cooperation with consumer focus groups. Consumer Product Safety Commission has produced a page on pool safety and safety products.

Pools and spas are not considered dangerous, yet the lack of proper precaution or available safety products can create hazardous conditions or liability concerns for the pool owner. Drowning can occur in a split second to people of all ages and swimming ability.

Spinal injuries continue to happen from improper diving, to slip and fall cases that could end up in court, to the use of hazardous materials requiring a visit to the emergency room. The information below is divided into 2 categories: 1 - Drowning & Accident Prevention and 2 - Chemical Use and Storage Safety.

Drowning & Accident Prevention

NSPI statistics show that drowning and swimming accidents are best prevented by adult supervision, public awareness programs including water safety training for young children, and not drinking alcohol while swimming, diving or soaking. Statistically, most accidents involving drowning or severe injury occur to children under 5 years of age who are unsupervised, cannot swim, and fall into a pool or pool cover with water on top.

Toddlers at the age of 2 or 3 are most likely to wander off from a parent's supervision. Barriers such as fences or back doors are often left unlocked. Drowning is NOT accompanied by loud noise or splashing sounds. DROWNING IS SILENT! To prevent child-drowning, there is NO substitute for parental supervision.

The second largest number of accidental injuries occur to teenagers, primarily males. Often the victim has been drinking alcohol and has dove into the pool in an area too shallow for diving, or from a location not intended for diving (like the roof of the house). Many of those who "drink and dive" end up in a wheelchair, if they're lucky. Alcohol and spas are also a potentially lethal combination; the hot water and the alcohol combine to cause individuals to fall asleep and drown in only three feet of water.

Other hazards exist, like standing water on top of solid pool covers. Small children and animals can drown in as little as a few inches of water. Cover pumps are available and must be used, or switch to a mesh type safety cover. Solar blankets or solid covers must be completely removed before entering the water. Entrapment by the suction of a single main drain on long hair or small arms and legs has been the cause of drowning in the past. New standards require double main drains or a safety switch to prevent this.

In some areas of the nation's sunbelt, drowning has been the leading cause of accidental death in the home of children under 5 years old. The information below can help parents and caregivers provide young children with the protection they deserve.

Each year, nationwide, more than 300 children under 5 years old drown in residential swimming pools, usually a pool owned by their family. In addition, more than 2,000 children in that age group are treated in hospital emergency rooms for submersion injures. Medical costs for submersion victims during the initial hospitalization alone can be quite high. Costs can range from an estimated $2,000 for a victim who recovers fully to $80,000 for a victim with severe brain damage.

Some severely brain damaged victims have initial hospital stays in excess of 120 days and expenses in excess of $150,000. Many communities have enacted safety regulations governing residential swimming pools -- in-ground and above-ground. It's up to parents to comply with these regulations. Apart from these laws, parents who own pools can take their own precautions to reduce the chances of their youngsters accessing the family pool or spa without adult supervision.

Facts & Figures
The following are just a few facts uncovered by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in a comprehensive study of drowning and submersion incidents involving children under 5 years old in Arizona, California, and Florida.

•Seventy-five percent of the submersion victims studied by CPSC were between 1 and 3 years old; 65 percent of this group were boys. Toddlers, in particular, often do something unexpected because their capabilities change daily.

•At the time of the incidents, most victims were being supervised by one or both parents. Forty-six percent of the victims were last seen in the house; 23 percent were last seen in the yard or on the porch or patio; and 31 percent were in or around the pool before the accident. In all, 69 percent of the children were not expected to be at or in the pool, yet they were found in the water.

•Submersion incidents involving children usually happen in familiar surroundings. Sixty-five percent of the incidents happened in a pool owned by the child's family and 33 percent of the incidents happened in a pool owned by friends or relatives.

•Pool submersions involving children happen quickly. A child can drown in the time it takes to answer a phone. Seventy-seven percent of the victims had been missing from sight for 5 minutes or less.

•Survival depends on rescuing the child quickly and restarting the breathing process, even while the child is still in the water. Seconds count in preventing death or brain damage.

•Child drowning is a silent death. There's no splashing to alert anyone that the child is in trouble.

More NSPI (National Spa & Pool Institute) Drowning Prevention Tips

1.There is NO substitute for adequate supervision. The "buddy system" of two children, is no substitute. Even people that can swim, very well, can drown when they bump their head, become entrapped, or have medical emergencies like seizures or black outs. DON'T LET THEM OUT OF YOUR SIGHT!

2.Pools and spas are attractive to children; what the court calls an "attractive nuisance". There must be a permanent barrier to entry. Local ordinances will specify a 3-sided or a 4-sided, non-climbable fence with self-closing, self-latching mechanisms on the gate. The gate should be locked when the pool is not in use. Do not place chairs or tables near a fence which would allow a child to climb over. Portable, above ground spas should have a hard top that locks on, preventing its use.

3.In addition to a barrier around the pool, NSPI promotes an idea called Layers of Protection, and has produced a pamphlet under the same name. This is the combination of many safety features working together to form several "layers" of safety protection around a swimming pool or spa. A simple fence just won't do to protect the pool when it is not under supervision. Door exit alarms, infrared detectors or security cameras. Pool alarms, child alarms, or pool safety covers will all help to prevent accidents.

4.Ensure that the pool is in clear view from the house, and not obstructed by plants, canopies, solid fences, or darkness. This is not so that you can watch your swimmers from the house; rather to ensure that the pool is not in use when it is not supposed to be.


5.Place a phone nearby the pool with emergency numbers (911, fire department, poison control center, etc.) listed. Signage about the pool, with "pool rules" is a good idea, but remember to always instruct new users of your pool to what is allowed and what is not. Having a pool can make you popular with neighborhood friends of your children. If rules are not followed, do not allow these children to use the pool.

6.Having rescue equipment on hand can help prevent a drowning person from drowning someone else. Ring buoys & reaching poles with life hooks should be at the ready. First aid kits should be nearby also.

7.If you use a pool or spa cover, follow all instructions for their safe installation, use and maintenance. Always remove a cover completely before using the pool, and do not let standing water remain on top; pump it off.

8.Do not allow children to play near a pool. Games and bike riding can result in someone going in, perhaps bumping their head on the way.

9.Learn CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation).

10.Have your children take swimming lessons at an early age.

Use of Diving Boards

1.If the diving board bothers you, have it removed. If it is too large for the length and depth of the pool; found on many older pools, have it removed.

2.Inspect the board, the stand, and the hardware for signs of age, cracking, rust, etc.

3.Do Not allow any drinking and diving. Place a chair on top of the board, with a "No Diving" sign during pool parties.

4.Follow the manufacturer's instructions on safe diving practices, or consult NSPI's pamphlet "Knowing how to dive can be worth more than gold". Instruct all users of your diving board on proper technique.

Chemical Use and Storage Safety
Chemical Safety practices are important to prevent accidents during the transportation, use, and storage of pool chemicals.


Transporting Chemicals
1.Keep your vehicle clean and organized.

2.Separate incompatible chemicals, distribute between front seat, back seat and/or trunk.

3.Don't purchase or carry damaged containers.

4.Anchor your load securely, so that it won't move around.

5.Ask your pool supply dealer for MSDS sheets, for your information and HAZMAT personnel in case of an accident.

Storing Pool Chemicals1.Store chemicals in a cool, dry, well ventilated area, with a locked entry. Do not set outside in the sun.

1.Keep out of reach of children.

2.Keep pool and spa chemicals separate from each other, and from other chemicals. Violent reactions such as explosion, fire, or noxious gas production can occur when incompatible chemicals contact each other. Never, ever mix any chemicals together.

3.Do not stack chemical containers on top of one another.

4.Replace lids and caps firmly and immediately after opening.

5.Post MSDS sheets and emergency information and phone numbers nearby.

Using Pool Chemicals
1.Follow label directions carefully. Read the instructions! If the label is faded or torn, don't guess what it is. Return it to your dealer.

1.Add chemicals to pool water, not the other way around. Chemicals should be added directly to the pool, or through a feeder especially designed for that type of chemical. Chemicals added directly to the skimmer could allow strong concentrations to harm pool equipment or swimmers. If the instructions suggest diluting with water first, use a clean, oversized bucket with water in it, then add chemicals to the water in the bucket. Read the Instructions!

2.Wear safety gear when handling chemicals. This may include a breathing respirator to prevent inhalation of fumes, face shield, gloves and apron.

1.Do Not mix chemicals...EVER! This includes direct mixing of full strength chemicals in a bucket, diluted concentrations and even adding chemicals to the same location in the pool. At the very least you may get a water quality problem, or you may endanger your life or the life of others. Chemicals can mix with each other by using containers or scoops which were previously used for other chemicals. Always use a clean bucket and scoop, designated only for that chemical.
1.Dispose of wastes and spills safely and properly. Immediately clean up any chemical spills. If a violent reaction has occurred, contact the fire department immediately and they will instruct you on steps to take until their arrival, if any. If the spilled chemical is a solid, carefully sweep it up using a clean broom and shovel, and place it in a clean, dry, plastic container. Avoid breathing the dust. If possible, dilute the chemical in water and add it to the pool or spa. Then test and balance the water. If this is not possible, contact the fire department for instructions on disposal. Do not place floor sweepings of chemicals back into the original container. Any foreign substance such as dust, dirt, and water can cause a reaction inside the container. Do not use a vacuum cleaner or shop-vacuum to clean up spilled substances. If the spilled substance is a liquid, it should be soaked up with clean, absorbent materials and placed inside a clean plastic or plastic lined container. Flush the area with large amounts of water.

1.Never smoke around any chemicals. Fire or explosion could result.
1.Do not breath chemical fumes or dust. Wash skin if contact occurs. If chemicals splash in eyes, flush eyes for 15 minutes, and see a physician immediately.

2.Use ONLY a water filled fire extinguisher on a chlorine chemical fire. Never use the dry chemical type of extinguisher.

3.Keep posted emergency numbers for the fire department, poison control center, and MSDS sheets of all chemicals on hand.

Paralysis

Improper diving or sliding, alcohol consumption, horseplay, or roughhousing in and around swimming pools may lead to serious neck and spinal injuries including paralysis, in the form of quadriplegia or paraplegia.

A number of these injuries occur yearly, with the overwhelming majority occurring in shallow water. A number of people who ignored these rules and chose to dive into shallow water are now paralyzed. The facts show that many of these were experienced divers. Don't let this happen to you.

Inform family and guests who come to enjoy your pool of the safety rules you have established.

Kids Safety

Safety & You:
Splashing, wading, and paddling – it must mean a great day in the water. Playing at the beach, at a water park, by a lake, or in a pool can be a real treat on a hot day. Swimming is a lot of fun, but drowning is a real danger. Let's find out how to stay safe in the water.

Why Is It Important to Be Safe in the Water?:
Fish are able to live and breathe under water, but people need air to breathe. People drown when too much water gets into their lungs. When that happens, the lungs can't carry enough oxygen to the brain and the rest of the body.

Drowning is the second most common cause of death from injuries among kids under the age of 14. Drowning can happen fast – sometimes in less than 2 minutes after a person's head goes under the water. That leaves very little time for someone to help.

Many drownings and near drownings occur when a kid accidentally falls into a swimming pool. But accidents can happen anywhere – at someone's home or even at your own house, and that's why you need to know how to be safe around water.

Swimming Pools:
Pools are awesome! What could be better than a dip in the pool and fun in the sun? But remember a pool's sides and bottom are usually made of concrete, a rock-hard material. A slip or fall could be painful and dangerous.

Have you seen those big numbers painted on the side of the pool? Those are called depth markers – they tell you how deep the water is at that point. You should always look before you jump into a pool. You should also only dive off the diving board. Never dive off the side of the pool unless an adult says that the water is deep enough. The water may be shallower than you think. If you hit the bottom . . . ouch! You might get knocked out or you could hurt your neck very badly.

Test the pool's water temperature before you plunge in. Cold water can shock your body and make your blood pressure and heart rate go up. You might accidentally open your mouth to yell and accidentally breathe in some water. Cold water can also slow your muscles, making it hard to swim.

Here's some other good advice for the pool:

▪ Always have an adult watch you when you are in the pool – even in your own backyard. Never go in the pool if there is not an adult around.
▪ Gates are around pools for a reason – to keep kids away from the water when there isn't a lifeguard or adult around to watch them. Never go through any pool gates when they are closed. Stay safe and stay out!
▪ Always obey pool rules.
▪ Swim with a buddy.
▪ If you're learning to swim, ask your mom or dad to make sure your flotation devices are Coast Guard approved.
▪ Walk slowly in the pool area. Don't run.
▪ Swim at a depth that is safe for you. If you're just learning to swim, stay in the shallow end.
▪ Don't push or jump on others. You could accidentally hurt someone or yourself.
▪ Toys to help you float come in many shapes and sizes (an inner tube, air mattress, or beach ball, for example). Although they are fun and can help you while you learn to swim, they can't save a life. These toys can lose air or float away.
▪ Don't chew gum or eat while you swim – you could choke.

Lakes and Ponds:
Lots of kids swim in streams, lakes, or ponds. Extra care must be taken when swimming in these beautiful places. You can't always see the bottom of the lake or pond, so you don't always know the depth of the water. This is another reason to always swim with an adult. Although the fish swimming around won't hurt you, some ponds and lakes may hide jagged rocks, broken bottles, or trash. Wear something to protect your feet. Also, watch out for weeds and grass, which can trap even a good swimmer. If you panic and try to yank yourself free, you may get even more tangled. Instead, shake and pull your arms and legs slowly to work yourself loose or call for an adult's help.

If you're going out on a boat, always wear a life jacket. (Again, the life jacket should be Coast Guard approved.) Even if you are a good swimmer, something could cause the boat to tip over and you could be trapped underneath.

Beaches:
It's hard to resist a day on the beach, but you'll need to know some safety rules when you're swimming in the ocean. When you first get to the beach, check with the lifeguard to find out how strong the waves are. Some places fly flags or write notes on a chalkboard to give swimmers an idea of what conditions are like.

In some places swimmers may encounter strong undertows or ocean currents. Rip currents are so strong that they can carry swimmers away from shore before they know what's happening. If you are caught in a current, swim parallel to the shore (alongside the shore) rather than to the shore until the water stops pulling you, then swim back to shore. If you can't get back to the beach, tread water and wave for a lifeguard's help.

You probably won't see any sharks (although a friendly dolphin may splash by) where you are swimming. But you might run into some jellyfish or Portuguese man-of-wars. These umbrella-shaped, nearly clear animals can grow to be as large as several feet in diameter! They are often found floating near the shore. Getting stung is no fun – it can hurt and blister your skin. If you get stung, tell an adult as soon as possible.

Here are some other good water safety tips:
▪ Learn to swim. Ask your parents to contact your local American Red Cross or community center for information on boating or water safety courses.
▪ Always apply plenty of sunscreen before you go outside. It's also a good idea to wear sunglasses and a hat to protect your skin from ▪ the sun's harmful rays.
▪ Stop swimming or boating as soon as you see or hear a storm. Remember, lightning is electricity – electricity and water are a dangerous combination.
▪ Don't swim in the dark.
▪ Wherever you're swimming, do have a waterfall of fun!

Diving Safety

One of the best pool safety features of all is a properly installed, quality diving board. Last year there were more than one billion dives from diving boards at residential in-ground swimming pools, and none resulted in serious accident or injury when pools met the ANSI/NSPI-5 Standard . This safety record has been ongoing for a number of years.

The presence of a diving board lets everyone know immediately that a deep water area exists, and that is where all diving should be conducted. Diving in shallow water, less than six feet deep can be dangerous. A diving board directs children and adults away from shallow areas that are unsafe for diving, keeping diving to the deep end of the pool, where diving is safe and fun.

Safe diving follows these common sense rules:

▪ Dive only from the end of a diving board and not from the sides.
▪ Know the water depth and plan your dive path.
▪ Always make a shallow, controlled dive, holding your head and arms up, back arched and steering with your hands.
▪ Don't run and dive.
▪ Do not dive into shallow water.
▪ Always make a shallow dive holding your head and arms up, and steering with your hands.
▪ Make sure there are no submerged obstacles or surface objects in the dive path.
▪ Never dive from the side of an in-ground pool.
▪ Never drink or use drugs and dive.

n Case of an Swimming Pool Emergency

Remember CHECK-CALL-CARE:
If you come upon a person in an emergency, CHECK the scene to ensure it's safe and CHECK the victim, CALL 9-1-1 or your local emergency number, and CARE for the person until help arrives.
Take an American Red Cross CPR and first aid class.
Keep a phone by the pool.
Knowing these skills can be important around the water and you will expand your capabilities in providing care for your child.

Child Supervision around Swimming Pool

All caretakers of children: parents, grandparents, baby-sitters, older siblings, etc., must be instructed to watch children constantly.

Children are naturally curious and must be supervised at all times when in and around all bodies of water, including pools and spas. The NSPSC says: "Drowning is a silent accident; rarely is there a cry for help or a splash, yet it is preventable. Never take your eyes off a child when he/she is in or near any body of water, even for a second."

At no time should you leave your child unattended in or around any water environment (pool, stream, tub, toilet, bucket of water), no matter what skills your child has acquired and no matter how shallow the water.

Don't rely on substitutes: The use of flotation devices and inflatable toys cannot replace parental supervision. Such devices could suddenly shift position, lose air or slip out from underneath, leaving the child in a dangerous situation.

Encourage safe practices: Don't assume young children will use good judgment and caution around the water. Children must be constantly reminded to walk slowly in the pool area and only to enter the water with you.

Swimming Pool Safety

Install barriers to make the pool or spa area safer and delay entry of unsupervised children. Fences should be at least four feet high with self-closing, self-latching gates, which are kept in good working order.

Power safety covers or doors equipped with an alarm system or self-closing and self-latching devices are other effective safety features.

While these measures do not replace supervision, they can prevent or detect access by young children to the pool. Use these barriers in "layers," with each layer adding to the safety of the pool.

Don't leave toys in the water: Toys could lure a child back when a parent is not present.

Enroll in a water safety course with your child: Your decision to provide your child with an early aquatic experience is a gift that will have infinite rewards.

Watch the weather: Know local weather conditions and prepare for electrical storms. Because water conducts electricity, stop swimming as soon as you see or hear a storm.

Swimming Pool Drowning

According to the National Safety Council, drowning is a leading cause of accidental death in this country, especially for children under five.

Although the greatest percentage of drownings occur in natural aquatic settings, (e.g., oceans, lakes, quarries, etc.) drownings do occur in swimming pools. The water depth of any pool is sufficient for drowning to occur.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports drowning of children even in water buckets and toilets.

Protecting young children from accidental drownings and near drownings in all aquatic environments, whether natural or constructed, is a primary concern of the aquatic industry, health and safety organizations and regulatory groups. It is the responsibility of the parent, caretaker and pool owner to prevent accidents.

Swimming Pool General Guidelines

In ground pools can be constructed in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on the amount of
space available in a yard and the functionality you desire. Depths may range from splash areas
of 3-to-5 feet to diving pools of 6-to-8 or 10 feet.

Robo-Kleen Pool Cleaner Maintenance

Maintenance:
There are only a few simple steps to maintaining your Robo-Kleen.

! ALWAYS SWITCH OFF POWER SUPPLY BEFORE PERFORMING MAINTENANCE.

1) Uncoiling cable:
If cable becomes twisted, unplug from power supply and untwist manually. Untwisting manually is most effective after allowing cable to lay in the sun so it becomes pliable.

2) Clean Filter Bag:
a. Place Robo-Kleen upside down. Push the locking tabs to the side to unlock the bottom lid. Remove the bottom lid with filter bag attached.

b. Pull one of the 4 red tabs out and remove the filter bag from the bottom lid. Turn the filter bag inside out. Use a garden hose to wash it thoroughly. The bag should be laundered periodically, using a regular wash cycle.

c. Rinse the bottom lid parts and bottom brushes.

d. Refit the filter bag with the fluffy surface inward. Start from one corner - align one of the red tabs with the corner. Gently insert the stitched edge of the filter bag into the double walls (groove) of the bottom lid, and work your way around.

e. Replace the bottom lid assembly in the body of the unit and lock in place.

3) Impeller:
Occasionally hair or linen may get caught in the impeller. If that happens, take the top grill off by removing the 2 screws from the top. MAKE SURE THE TRANSFORMER IS UNPLUGGED. Remove the debris. Replace the top grill and tighten the 2 screws.

4) Front Drive Wheels and Rear Idler Wheels:
Remove debris or tree leaves caught in the axle bearing. CAUTION: Do not turn the drive wheels by force. This may cause damage to the drive gear train.

5) Winterization
Always remove cleaner from pool for winterization. Do not store Robo-Kleen where the temperature drops below 40˚ F. Freezing temperatures can affect seals and lubricants used in the mechanism

Swimming Pool Care Instant Frog

Regular Pool Care
1. Run pump and filter at least 8 hours per day.
2. Regularly test water for pH, total alkalinity and chlorine levels.
3. Maintain a 0.5 ppm to 1.0 ppm chlorine level at all times. A chlorinator or floater is recommended. If using chlorine pucks in the skimmer basket, place them under INSTANT FROG®.
4. Shock pool per the manufacturer’s instructions with a chlorine or non-chlorine shock once a week or if water looks hazy.
5. Check filter gauge regularly and clean or backwash when needed per the manufacturers directions.
6. Periodically clean skimmer basket of excess debris as normal.
7. REMEMBER TO REPLACE INSTANT FROG® EVERY 6 MONTHS.

Above Ground Pool Maintenance Tips

Use clear lacquer or clear nail polish to cover screw heads in your swimming pool. Use clear lacquer or nail polish to cover any scratches on ledges or verticals of your swimming pool to prevent rust and corrosion.

Use wax to protect the pool wall and frame from the elements.
Never leave the swimming pool drained (without water). This can cause liner shrinkage and damage the pool wall and frame.

If you use the Thru The Wall fittings for your filter and decide to dismantle your pool or remove your liner, it is possible that you may not be able to realign these holes and a new liner may have to be purchased.

Check regularly for signs of wear or loose bolts that could make the swimming pool, the pool ladder, the pool deck, or any other related object unsafe. Check all the metal on the swimming pool frame and pool wall for signs of corrosion or deterioration. Remove any corrosion and touch up with paint. Excessive deterioration can lead to failure of the pool structure, which might release large quantities of water that could cause bodily harm and property damage.

Routine Swimming Pool Maintenance - in Season

Proper Swimming Pool Maintenance is your first line of defense in preventing most common problems. Following this easy maintenance checklist should keep your pool water crystal clear and trouble free.

Routine Swimming Pool Maintenance:

TWICE A WEEK:
1. Use AquaChek Test Strips to Check and maintain your Pool Chemicals Such as keep your ph. levels at 7.4 - 7.6.
2. Test and maintain the free available chlorine level at 1.0 - 3.0 ppm.
3. Empty the skimmer baskets and clean tile or pool water at water line with Pool Surface Cleaner, and skim leaves, insects and other floating debris from the pool surface.

ONCE A WEEK:
1. Shock the pool by adding one bag of Shock per 10,000 gallons. Additional shock may be needed after a rain storm, heavy bather load, or exceptionally hot weather.
2. Add a maintenance dose of Algae Preventative or to prevent algae growth.
3. Brush walls and use a pool vacuum to clean floors.

MONTHLY:
Take a water sample to your professional Water Testing Service or use our Test Strips for a complete Swimming Pool Chemicals analysis.

MID-SEASON:
Clean your filter with Filter Cleaner Degreaser to remove any oils and grease that may have accumulated on your filter.
After using a Flock or Metal Remover wait 24 to 36 hrs. then use your Pool Vacuum to clean pool floor before swimming.
On Rainy or Windy Days Never Test your Pool Water using AquaChek Test Strips, or any other Test kit.
