The hot water in your portable spa may feel relaxing but its also a good home for bacterial and other microorganisms that can affect your health. To avoid trouble, keep your spa clean by using the right chemicals. The correct amount of sanitizers will kill these uninvited guests.
Below are some common chemicals that keep spas clean. Before using any of them, its wise to read your spas instruction manual since some products may not be compatible with the kind of spa you have.
Bromine - is similar to chlorine but is easier to use and doesn't have a bad smell. It creates bromamines - disinfectants that are odorless and less irritating than chloramines made by chlorine. Bromine is suitable for high water temperatures and is more stable as well.
Chlorine - is the oldest chemical for cleaning water. However, it has a strong smell and is irritating to the skin and eyes. Certain health problems have also been associated with the use of chlorine although the jury is still out on this mater.
Biguanide - is a sanitizer without chlorine or bromine that eliminates bacteria by attacking the cell wall. This is done with a hydrogen peroxide-based oxidizer that burns organic matter and keeps the water clear. This chemical produces fewer odors than chlorine or bromine.
Ozone - is an oxidizer that reduces the amount of sanitizers needed to keep the spa clean. It relies on a device called an ozonator. But you still need to clean your water with a low level of bromine or chlorine. Don't think that using an ozonator is enough to thoroughly sanitize your spa. Ozone works with bromine, chlorine, biguanide and mineral systems.
