The swimming pool decking is an area immediately after the water surface. This area should create a relaxing atmosphere. It should be flat and safe to walk or lie on. The area should be at least fifteenth feet wide, after the grating around the pool. It is also where pool furniture can positioned around the pool. This includes beds, chairs, tents or gazebos. The decking should be done using materials that are not slippery to walk on. It should also be done with a fall away from the pool grating to shed off the water.

During the pool construction, the decking area should be clearly marked out. Around a baby pool, the rest area should be wider by about two feet from the normal deck area. This is to allow more people to stand or sit as they watch over the young ones as they swim. Light fixtures can also be erected for use on the deck at night. The area can also be planted with some greenery or bushes. Trees should not be planted very near the pool decking. Only those that grow with roots downwards. The construction of the pool decking begins by compacting the intended area. The decking base is done lower than the pool. This depth will depend on the material to finish the surface area. The soil is compacted using a small mechanical compactor. It is then level led and made to fall away from the pool. When using stone slates or concrete slabs, a blinding layer is added before laying. The slates should be of different shapes and sizes. This is for giving good aesthetic and for a rustic finish.

The decking base once compacted, a two inch quarry dust blinding layer is laid. A rake is used to ensure it is even in thickness. The electric power conduits are laid at this time. The stone slates are then laid on top of the dust. The laying starts from the pool edge outwards. After the stone slates are laid, a rich mortar mix is done for the joints. If the slates are yellow in color, an oxide matching them may be used. The mortar is then keyed in and allowed to dry for three days while curing with water. The deck can then be used thereafter.
