Algae are the thousands of kinds of one-celled plants that appear in various colors and can leave a slimy residue on your pool walls. It occurs often in plaster pools (the relatively rough surface
gives algae something to cling to), but can appear elsewhere as well.
The best way to prevent the formation of algae in your pool is to
be fastidious about sanitation and cleaning. However, even if your pool is kept clean and the chemicals are balanced, algae can still find its way into your pool. The spores might be carried from the water used to fill your pool. They can also float on the wind.
Algae is most prevalent in shallow water (because it heats up faster than deep water). Pool steps are a favorite breeding ground.
Unfortunately, algae can be a pain to remove. Some kinds can be brushed away easily, but others are quite tough. Check with your pool chemical supplier for algaecides that can help.
